A MASVINGO resident and former Zimbabwe Union of Journalists leader, Matthew Takaona, has been released from detention after he was arrested by some Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers under flimsy circumstances.
Takaona was arrested by ZRP officers on Tuesday 3 June 2025 and detained at Gutu Police Station for about six hours after the law enforcement agents accused him of cutting overgrown grass near Mushayavanhu Primary School, which was impairing visibility on the edges of a tarred road.
Takaona, who was represented by lawyers who included Collen Maboke of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, was released from police custody on Tuesday 3 June 2025 with no charge preferred against him after ZRP officers unsuccessfully attempted to get him to write a statement narrating what had transpired to which his lawyers opposed such a request, stating that it was unprocedural.
