MASVINGO High Court Judge Justice Neville Wamambo will on Monday 15 July 2019 hear an application for bail filed by MDC National Vice-Chairperson Hon. Job Sikhala, who was remanded in custody after he was arrested and charged with plotting to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government.

Hon. Sikhala’s lawyers Jeremiah Bamu and Tinomuda Shoko of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights filed the application for bail on Thursday 11 July 2019 after their client appeared before Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa at Bikita Magistrates Court, who remanded him in custody to Wednesday 24 July 2019.

Hon. Sikhala was detained on Tuesday 9 July 2019 and charged with subverting constitutional government as defined in section 22(2)(a)(iii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Prosecutors alleged that Hon. Sikhala advocated for the overthrowing of government through unconstitutional means during his address to some MDC party supporters at a political rally held on Saturday 6 July 2019 at Mandadzaka Primary School in Bikita in Masvingo province.

Meanwhile, MDC Youth Assembly Secretary-General Gift Ostallos Siziba was set free on Thursday 11 July 2019 after he was granted $1 000 bail by Harare Magistrate Elijah Makomo.

As part of his bail conditions, Siziba, who was charged with incitement to commit public violence as defined in section 187 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, was ordered to report three times a week at Harare Central Police Station, continue residing at his given residential address and not to interfere with state witnesses and investigations.

The MDC youth leader, who is represented by Moses Nkomo of ZLHR, returns to court on Wednesday 24 July 2019.
