A ZIMBABWEAN court has set free a top MDC Alliance official, Morgen Komichi, who was arrested on Friday 17 August 2018 and charged with contravening the country’s electoral laws after he allegedly interrupted the 2018 harmonised election proceedings conducted by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
Harare Magistrate Learnmore Mapiye granted Komichi $200 bail and ordered him to report once a week on Fridays at Harare Central Police Station and not to interfere with witnesses.
Komichi, who was represented by Obey Shava and Jeremiah Bamu of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, was also ordered to surrender his passport and to continue residing at his given residential address until the matter is finalised.
Prosecutors claimed that Komichi, the MDC Alliance party’s National Chairperson contravened section 186 of the Electoral Act after he allegedly interrupted, obstructed and disturbed proceedings of the announcement of the results of the 2018 harmonised elections on Thursday 02 August 2018 at the ZEC
Command Centre in Harare by getting on the podium reserved for ZEC commissioners after the
announcement break and announced his rejection of official results announced by the elections management body.
Komichi returns to court on Tuesday 21 August 2018, where his lawyers intend to challenge the legality of his arrest and placement on remand.
